Pacific International Hospital has been awarded the tender to commission and operate the Port Moresby Private Hospital in Boroko in Papua New Guinea.

PIH, which operates another private hospital in Port Moresby, beat out two other shortlisted specialised health groups - the InterFinancial Consortium operating in Iraq, and Australia-based JTA International.

The Independent Public Business Corporation's managing director, Glenn Blake, says the hospital in Boroko will be capable of providing advanced medical services such as diagnosis and operations for heart disease and cancer.

Papua New Guineans have formerly only be able to access these and other specialty medical services by going abroad.

The Boroko hospital building, which was completed in 2000, is expected to be commissioned and commence operations in about a year.

It will be staffed with more than 500 personnel.
