Six people face Tongan court over drugs case

1:40 pm on 6 July 2011

Six people are due to appear in court in Tonga following the seizure of controlled chemicals used for the production of methamphetamine.

A Tongan police officer, four Chinese nationals and one Taiwanese national will appear before the Magistrate's Court on Friday.

An operation involving police officers in Tonga, New Zealand and the Customs Departments of both countries resulted in the arrests

The Police Commissioner, Chris Kelley, says preliminary tests indicate the more than six kilogrammes of chemicals was pseudoephedrine.

Commissioner Kelley also says they know where the chemicals came from.

"We are able to determine where the chemicals originated from and I can say mainland Asia at this point, I don't want to be too specific because once again it's before the court but certainly mainland Asia."

Police Commissioner Chris Kelley says police believe the arrests also disrupted plans to establish a methamphetamine laboratory on Tongatapu.

Last year, police seized 17.6 kilos of methamphetamine worth more than 14 million US dollars, which was Tonga's largest drug bust.
