The Solomon Islands Prime Minister has urged all Solomon Islanders to celebrate their citizenship and freedom as the country marks the 33rd anniversary of its independence.

Solomon Islands achieved independence from Britain on July the 7th, 1978.

The Solomon Times reports Danny Philip as saying that as the country stands on the edge of a new frontier, citizens have an obligation to protect their country and each other, as well as a responsibility to reconstruct the Happy Isles.

Mr Philip also thanked the country's major donors and diplomatic friends for help in difficult times.
