A Human rights advocate in the Northern Mariana Islands is opposed to a bill giving CNMI-only resident status for limited groups of people living and working in the CNMI.
Wendy Doromal is opposed to Delegate Gregorio Kilili Sablan's bill which gives four specific groups of people in the CNMI resident status, including foreign parents of US citizens.
She will submit a written testimony to a House Subcommittee on Fisheries, Wildlife, Oceans and Insular Affairs public hearing on the bill before the end of the week.
Ms Doromal insists that the proposed new CNMI-only immigration status is a separatist, apartheid-type status that would continue the persistent exploitation of foreign workers under federal rule.
The United Workers Movement president Rabby Syed says the union is opposed to Mr Sablan's bill because it does not cover foreign workers who have been in the CNMI for years or decades.
