Cooks police point to local youths for spate of thefts

Cook Islands Police say a group of local youths is behind a recent spate of thefts and burglaries on Rarotonga.

Police are urging residents and tourists to be more security-concious to protect their property and goods.

Inspector Tere Patia says the offending has been on Rarotonga and thieves seem to be targeting tourist accommodation with minimal security, local businesses and homes, and even one school.

He says many of these offenders are already known to police.

"What we find is that they always go for cash, electronic equipment, alcohol. It's the rental stuff. Most times it's money. Most times these are the same people, I mean known offenders, who take up the opportunity and what they see they are tempted to go in and steal."
