Fiji aims to diversify sources of tourism arrivals

Fiji's interim Minister of Tourism Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says Fiji's tourism industry needs to continue to diversify beyond traditional sources of tourists like Australia and New Zealand.

He was commenting after the release of new figures which show a record number of visitors for the month of April and a nearly fifty percent year on year increase in tourists from China.

The total number of visitor arrivals for the year grew by 9% to nearly 187 thousand.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum says Australia continues to be the biggest source of tourists.

"But we want to decrease our percentage of arrivals from Australia and New Zealand. We want to grow the numbers but in order for us to have a long term strategy and a sustainable tourism sector we need to spread our risk."

Mr Sayez-Kaiyum says consultants have been engaged to look at marketing strategy and tourism spending.
