Cooks Islands man due in court on rape and sexual assault charges

10:42 am on 20 July 2011

DNA evidence has been obtained by prosecutors investigating charges of rape and sexual assault against a Cook Islands man.

The man has name suppression to protect the victim's identity.

He's denied the charges, which relate to incidents in the small island community of Mangaia last year.

The man has no legal representation and has been ordered by a New Zealand judge to apply for legal aid.

He's on bail and will next appear in the High Court at Avarua in Rarotonga on August 18.
