1:50 pm on 22 July 2011

A fishing boat ran aground this morning on a reef off American Samoa's main island, Tutuila, as it was returning to Pago Pago harbour after a fishing trip.

The fishing boat named Inga, belongs to an Asian businessman and had seven crew on board.

Lieutenant Steven Caskey, the head of the Coast Guard's marine safety detachment unit says it lost its engine as it was returning to port and drifted on to the reef.

One of the crew members then swam to shore to get help.

Lieutenant Caskey says all of the crew members are safe.

Efforts are now being made to get the vessel off the reef.
