FAA halts US$16M airport project in Majuro

A close to US$16 million, US funded, airport improvement project has been put on hold, in the Marshall Islands.

Reports suggest the Federal Aviation Administration is concerned that planned dredging will destroy a coral reef adjacent to the runway.

Officials who asked not to be named say the FAA has informed government officials in Majuro that they must find a method of dredging that is less destructive of the coral reef.

Although initial site work on the largest construction project in Marshall Islands history started in May, work has now halted.
