In Indonesia seventeen people have reportedly been killed and dozens injured in Papua's Puncak Jaya regency in weekend clashes between supporters of rival candidates in a local election.
The Jakarta Post reports that the groups attacked each other outside the local legislative council building starting on Saturday afternoon, using rocks as well as bows and arrows.
Nearby houses and cars were set on fire during the mayhem.
Papua police were yesterday deployed to the site to stop the fighting and evacuate the dead.
As of last night, officers from the local Mobile Brigade unit were seen securing the local Elections Commission's office and the Papua Police headquarters.
The violence reportedly erupted after the Commission rejected the candidacy of Simon Alom whose supporters then confronted the backers of his rival, Elvis Tabuli.
