Vanuatu government sponsored students running out of money

7:34 pm on 1 August 2011

Vanuatu government sponsored students studying at the University of the South Pacific in Fiji are having to rely on the kindness of other students to survive while they wait for over-due allowances from Vanuatu.

Around 100 students have been affected by the delay in their second semester payments which are more than two weeks overdue.

The President of the Vanuatu Students' Association, Joe Pakoa-Lui, says most students have run out of money.

He says other Vanuatu students on non-government scholarships have pitched in so the Association can provide those affected with meals.

"The Vanuatu Students' Association has agreed to assist to pay for their meals so they arranged for some rations to be delivered so they come to where I stay at the campus to have their meals. We give them one meal in the afternoon."

The chair of the Vanuatu National Education Commission says payments should go through by the end of this week.
