Hopes Micronesia can benefit from own resources and ocean

The Governor of Guam says Micronesian states should benefit more from the wealth of resources within their combined waters.

Eddie Calvo is hoping the region's political leaders can unite and push for reforms of US federal and international laws, to create a Micronesian Exclusive Economic Zone to determine how the region can profit from its waters.

A spokesman for the Governor, Phillp Guerrero, says Micronesia could profit through the granting of fishing licences and access through its waters and taxes levied on catches of fish.

"If you look at the total area of ocean size for Micronesia you get about two-thirds the United States. And in that ocean area you have some of the richest waters as far as mineral deposits and as far as wildlife. And for decades now, Micronesia, Guam, the Federated States of Micronesia, Palau, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands haven't been profiting from that. And it's really not fair when you think about it to the people of Micronesia."
