The installation of new tsunami hazard zone signs around shoreline villages in American Samoa is underway.
This is after funding was provided by the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration for a project that aims to get the territory's up to a federal Tsunami Ready designation.
The blue and white signs warn the public of areas that are at risk in the event of a tsunami, and advise people to seek higher ground when an earthquake occurs.
They also show the evacuation routes people should follow.
Homeland Security director Mike Sala says once the territory has Tsunami Ready status, it will have access to more federal funding to assist with tsunami hazard mitigation and preparedness programmes.
