Police reveal major bank robbery on small Cook Islands resort island

5:08 pm on 12 August 2011

A tiny bank on Aitutaki in the Cook Islands has been robbed with thousands of dollars stolen.

The exact amount taken hasn't been revealed but members of the Aitutaki community put the figure at up to 164 thousand US dollars.

Police Commissioner Maara Tetava says a large amount of money was stolen but he won't confirm it was only secured by a single padlock.

The burglary of the island's branch of the Bank of the Cook Islands happened one night last week when it was closed for business and no staff were present.

Mr Tetava says he can't remember a similar incident ever taking place in the Cook Islands.
