Decolonisation bid on French Polynesia assembly agenda

6:25 am on 18 August 2011

French Polynesia's assembly will open an extraordinary sitting tomorrow to deal with a resolution seeking the territory's reinscription on the UN decolonisation list.

The assembly president, Jacqui Drollet, says more than 30 of the assembly's 57 members have signed the text whose timing he says is interesting as the Pacific Islands Forum will be held in Auckland next month.

Mr Drollet says the President Oscar Temaru hopes to be armed with the resolution when he attends the Forum summit.

The assembly is also due to discuss a much delayed reform plan which calls for massive cuts in the public sector, including a proposal to turn Tahiti Nui TV into a web-based service.
