8:41 am on 20 August 2011

Police in New Caledonia have arrested 16 people in connection with the violence on Mare two weeks ago when four people were shot dead in a dispute at the island's airport.

The public prosecutor says the 16 were summoned to the local police station then flown in military aircraft to Noumea.

She says it's not impossible there will be more arrests.

The clashes also led to 30 people being injured and saw cars burnt and a bakery set on fire.

More than 140 police have been on Mare to calm the situation.
