Two locals will be among the contenders when the Billabong Pro surfing event gets underway at Teahupoo on Sunday.

World number seven Michel Bourez is expected to challenge for the title while Heiarri Williams scrapes in after finishing second in last weeks trials.

A spokesperson for the event, Jonathan Jenkins, says Williams has earnt his spot.

"That was his third time in the main event and he's a great surfer out here. There's also Michel Bourez and he's a full-time touring professional. He's hit the top ten in the world at the moment so those two guys they'll just have massive support once this thing gets underway."

Jonathan Jenkins says reigning world champion Kelly Slater and Australian Owen Wright will be strong contenders for the overall title, alongside the locals.

The competition is due to get underway on Sunday with waves of between four and six feet forecast.
