Sport: Lay day called in Tahiti

10:00 am on 22 August 2011

A lay day has been called at the Billabong Pro Tahiti this morning as the world's top surfers opted to hold out in favor of waiting for improved conditions forecast for the coming days.

Following the opening round of heats the swell dropped slightly this morning when organisers decided to stall the competition with the surf expected to reach up to four metres later in the week.

Contest director Chris O'Callaghan says he expects to call another lay day tomorrow so the competition can reach its climax when the monster waves hit.

Tahitian surfer Heiarii Williams will open round two proceedings against Frenchman Jeremy Flores.
