A final quarter meltdown has seen Guam upset 62-57 by hosts New Caledonia in the first round of men's basketball in Noumea.
After trailing at half time the US territory went on a 24-3 run and had a commanding eleven point lead early on in the final quarter.
But that dissipated down the final stretch and coach Vince Acfalle says foul trouble forced him to play some players out of position, which led to some confusion out on court.
"We got out of sync and so when we tried to sub by position we got out of sync there. Our rebounding was very weak. Our box-out - we had good position at box-out but with the length of New Caledonia we can't just allow ourselves to stay, we've got to box-out and continue pushing them out of the paint. That's one of the things that we've got to emphasise tomorrow."
Acfalle says despite the opening round loss, they're taking it one game at a time and will get back to work today against the Federated States of Micronesia.
New Caledonia's next match is against the Solomon Islands later tonight.
