Sport: Ten time world champ wins out in Tahiti

12:35 pm on 30 August 2011

Ten-time surfing world champion Kelly Slater has defeated Australian Owen Wright in the final of the ASP World surf tour event in Tahiti

It's the third time in his career Slater has won the coveted event in Teahupoo and the first time since 2005.

Wright led the heat early but as the minutes wound down he couldn't find the big wave to edge past Slater's combined wave score of 18.43.

Wright finished last year's tour as the world No.6 and rookie of the year, and had the chance to break into the top five if he had managed to win.

Slater is currently ranked outside the top five for this year's tour after skipping a recent event in South Africa, but winning Teahupoo will propel him back up the standings.
