Nauru speaker scolds MPs for absenteeism

1:09 pm on 30 August 2011

The Nauru speaker, Ludwig Scotty, has admonished MPs for failing to turn up to parliament.

He says at a sitting earlier this month there were just enough MPs to reach a quorum.

Mr Scotty, who is a former president, says seven members of the opposition were absent.

He says he received excuses of MPs claiming the notice of the sitting had been received too late and that they didn't have time to wash and prepare their clothes.

Mr Scotty says he can't believe that MPs have only one pair of trousers and one white shirt.

He says MPs must do their duty and attend the sittings so issues concerning the people and the Republic can be addressed.
