Unpaid Vanuatu teachers miss out in supplementary budget

The Vanuatu government appears to have put off plans to raise money for the wages owed to more than 100 teachers since the beginning of the year.

The teachers had been promised their outstanding wages would be covered by a supplementary budget that is now before parliament.

But the speaker's office has confirmed that the more than two million US dollars needed for the teachers isn't included in the supplementary budget.

It allows only for money to cover the school fees of children affected by cyclones in Tafea province earlier this year and about a million dollars for allowances for students at foreign universities.
