Samoa prosecutors succeed in appeal court in manslaughter case

Samoa's court of appeal has upheld an appeal by the prosecution against the jail terms of two men convicted of manslaughter after an assessor trial in March this year.

Hynie Godinet and Joseph Iefata were jailed in June for four years and four months, and three years respectively, over the death of a volleyball team member from American Samoa.

The prosecution has appealed against both sentences on the ground that they were manifestly inadequate because sentencing guidelines were not followed.

The court of appeal judges say the sentence could not be less than 10 years.
