Sport: PNG player sent off in rugby sevens

10:26 am on 1 September 2011

Papua New Guinea's Joanne Logana will miss her team's opening rugby sevens match this morning after being sent off in the 33-17 win over New Caledonia.

PNG were leading 26-5 early in the second half when the ex-volleyball representative was red carded for a dangerous tackle.

Her absence enabled the home team to gather momentum and score twice before PNG scored late in the game to ensure victory.

Team manager, Suzie Tongia Lepani, says they appealed the red card but Logana was found guilty and banned for one match.

Suzie Lepani says there is one positive.

"She probably needs that break anyway because we used her quite a bit so she can probably sit this game out, which will be against Cook Islands, and then she can come back and play against Samoa."

Papua New Guinea finished day one of the rugby sevens with three wins and a loss against Fiji, who were the only team to remain unbeaten.
