UN to hear call for international conference on nuclear fall-out, says Tahiti group

French Polynesia's nuclear test veterans organisation says Japanese groups will meet UN officials in New York this week in a bid to organise an international conference to help those affected by nuclear fall-out.

The head of Moruroa e tatou, Roland Oldham, says the initiative is being supported by groups in France, Algeria, Japan and French Polynesia.

Mr Oldham says this follows last year's push by the UN secretary general, Ban Ki-moon, to end all nuclear testing in line with a proposal put forward by Kazakhstan which eliminated its nuclear arms.

He says Japanese NGOs in the US will have a first meeting at the UN.

"They are the ones supporting this appeal and there will be the first talk at the United Nations in New York between some representatives of the United Nations and NGOs."
