PNG's Sir Michael Somare in good shape for parliament

Papua New Guinea's recently ousted prime minister Sir Michael Somare is reported to be in good shape for his return to parliament tomorrow.

A spokesperson, Brian Gomez, says Sir Michael has lost a lot of weight after five months of medical treatment in Singapore but managed to walk unassisted upon arrival in Port Moresby yesterday.

Sir Michael was replaced as prime minister a month ago after his position was declared vacant in parilament, a ruling that's being challenged in court.

Mr Gomez says Sir Michael's parliamentary attendance tomorrow will stop him from missing three consecutive sessions and losing his seat.

"His mental faculties are still all very normal, judging by the way he spoke yesterday to the people and the way he greeted people that were there to receive him, including recognising people on the street and opening his car to greet them."

Brian Gomez says Sir Michael believes he has a strong case for winning the court challenge over his replacement.
