Solomon Islands to export 25 dolphins to China

1:32 pm on 6 September 2011

Solomon Islands has given the green light for the export of 25 bottlenose dolphins to China today to be the placed in aquariums.

The Regional Director of Earth Island Institute, Lawrence Makili, is outraged at the move.

He says the local exporter does not have a relevant licence from the Ministry of Fisheries to operate as a dolphin trader.

"The Ministry of Environment and Conservation on September 1, issued a export permit for 25 dolphins to be shipped over to China. But the exporter himself, Dr Anita - a vet - has no operational licence since the beginning of 2011."

Dolphin trading in Solomon Islands has been an ongoing issue for more than a decade.

In the past, Mr Makili has campaigned against the export of dolphins to Dubai, the Philippines and Mexico.
