A New Zealand Greens party MP has called in the government not to strengthen bi-lateral defence ties with Indonesia while human rights abuses continue in Papua.
Catherine Delahunty says New Zealand intends strengthening bilateral defence links with Indonesia over the next year.
She says the New Zealand government needs to strongly condemn these human rights abuses and take practical steps to show Indonesia that this behaviour is not acceptable.
"The Indonesian military have killed and tortured many people in West Papua. This is ongoing and while that is happening we should not be co-operating with them in a bad sense. in fact we should be facilitating a peace process between Indonesia and indigenous Papuan citizens but not supporting military activity."
