22nd annual SPREP meeting begins in Samoa

8:10 am on 14 September 2011

Members of 25 Pacific Island countries and territories are meeting in Samoa this week to discuss environmental issues affecting the Pacific.

The 22nd Annual Secretariat of the Pacific Environment Programme or SPREP begins in Apia today, and finishes on Thursday.

The Deputy Director of SPREP, Kosi Latu, says the meeting follows the first Pacific Environment Forum that was held on Monday in Apia.

"A number of issues that have been discussed in the Forum are also part of the substantive agenda of the SPREP meeting, for example the Rio + 20. So the outcomes of this meeting will find its way into the SPREP meeting and the idea is to have them agreed and endorsed."

Mr Latu says an outcome statement will be tabled at the 22nd SPREP meeting outlining key messages relating to the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development or Rio-plus-twenty Conference - held in Brazil next year.
