Solomon Islands opens Geneva mission

4:39 pm on 21 September 2011

The Solomon Islands foreign minister, Peter Shanel, has officially opened a permanent mission to UN and other agencies based in Geneva.

He says while it's small and merely symbolic, the office has great significance for the government and people of Solomon Islands.

Mr Shanel says it manifests the desire to have the voice of Solomon Islands heard in the global arena.

He says the mission will strengthen Solomon Islands ability to achieve development-friendly trade outcomes and enhance the government's work on human rights.
