CNMI survey shows little casino support

5:15 am on 26 September 2011

Over half of the participants in a survey conducted by the Saipan Chamber of Commerce among its members have rejected a proposal to legalise casino gaming in the Northern Mariana Islands.

The survey also shows that most support the abolition of Article 12 of the CNMI Constitution, which restricts land ownership to persons of Northern Marianas descent.

The two issues are being considered by the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas' Legislature.

A little less than a third of the 150 chamber members responded to the survey questions, with 60 percent of the participants voting against casino gaming.

More than 75 percent favoured abolishing Article 12 and 11 percent didn't.
