Solomon Islands Olympic Games future uncertain

2:22 pm on 26 September 2011

The Solomon Islands might not be able to participate in the Olympic Games next year, if the National Olympic Committee of Solomon Islands, or NOCSI, cannot resolve its financial issues.

NOCSI is facing possible suspension from the Oceania National Olympic Committee, or ONOC, and the International Olympic Committee because it owes the Honiara City Council money.

A member of the National Olympic Committee of Solomon Islands, James Iroga, says NOCSI owes the city council an undisclosed amount in rent for the use of the council's multi purpose hall two and a half years ago.

"If NOCSI is suspended by ONOC then Solomon Islands will not participate in the international organised programmes. One is the participation in the Olympic Games or participation in the Oceania programme. Suspension of NOCSI is a big issue that will affect all sports in the country."

Mr Iroga says the future of Solomon Islands international sport lies in the hands of the Oceania National Olympic Committee.
