Guam governor convenes Decolonisation Commission

2:54 pm on 27 September 2011

The Guam Governor, Eddie Calvo, has convened the Commission on Decolonisation for the first time in about a decade.

Mr Calvo has also signed a letter to the US President Barack Obama, announcing the commission's plans to seek political self-determination.

He says whether it's free association, statehood or independence, the people of Guam need to come together to think these issues through and ultimately decide what is going to be the best course of action.

Mr Calvo says people don't need to look far to understand the degree of success and failure when exploring Guam's options.

Guam is one of 16 non-self-governing territories identified by the United Nations.
