Cooks police confirm gun import ban for rest of 2011

2:35 pm on 29 September 2011

The Cook Islands police commissioner Maara Tetava says a ban on the importation of firearms will remain in place until at least the end of this year.

At present no one is allowed to bring a gun into the Cook Islands, even if it is one registered locally but previously transported out of the country.

Mr Tetava says at present gun security in the Cook Islands is lacking and a review may result in a change of the law.

He says a review of gun licensing legislation and ownership is underway.

Among possible initiatives is the mandatory re-registering of all firearms and further registration of any firearm at least every two years.

Mr Tetava says there are more than 2,000 firearms in the country, with a population of about 18,000.
