The Media Association of Solomon Islands has spoken out about harassment of journalists and media organisations after supporters of MP Namson Tran demanded compensation from the Island Sun newspaper.
The Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corporation reports Mr Tran's supporters were upset by a front-page story quoting the chair of the Public Accounts Committee Mathew Wale labeling the MP as a criminal.
Mr Wale made his comments when the committee heard Mr Tran had allegedly put private registration plates on a government vehicle.
But the Media Association says the harassment is inappropriate and disrespectful of media freedom.
The statement says there are appropriate ways to settle disagreements and the best solution is to seek legal action.
The association says threats on journalists and the media is an undemocratic act.
The statement says the media was merely reporting what was said during the hearing, which was broadcast live on radio and television.
