Marshalls government accountability still lacking, says report

The Marshall Islands government ministries have been criticised for not fixing accountability problems for many years.

The Public Accounts Committee has issued a report, saying there has been a nearly one million US dollar increase in payments for Majuro landowners in fiscal year 2010.

The Committee, which is the financial watchdog for the parliament, says the Ministry of Finance has 14 audit findings from the previous years, and as of today only two findings have been resolved.

It says there is room for improvement in performance in all areas of government.

It strongly urges bolstering the Auditor General's office to follow through on audit reports to track progress by government ministries and agencies.
