The sacked Papua New Guinea police commissioner says his removal from the role has come as a surprise.
Tony Wagambie says he had expected to finish up mid next year when his contract ran out.
The government says they replaced Mr Wagambie late last week because the previous government hadn't followed the correct employment procedures when they appointed him.
Mr Wagambie says he won't elaborate on the government decision and doesn't know if it had anything to do with his changes to the fraud squad earlier last week.
He says his dismissal came out of the blue and he was told at work he had been replaced.
"So I rang my police minister and he said go and see him. So when I went and saw him he said I'm sorry, sir, but this has come out in cabinet and I said I respect the decision. But surprised? Yes very surprised."
