A Papua New Guinea MP, who is also chair of of the body preparing for the establishment of the province of Jiwaka, has been arrested and charged with raping a 14-year old girl in 2010.
Benjamin Mul was arrested and charged on Friday in Port Moresby, spending the night in a police cell before being granted bail.
The Post Courier reports that police allege that in February last year he had enticed the girl with cash and then raped her in the back of his vehicle.
But Mr Mul's lawyer's is claiming the arrest was a politically orchestrated move to smear his name.
