PNG Cabinet Minister declared leader of National Alliance by Court

7:29 pm on 6 October 2011

The Papua New Guinea National Court has ruled that Finance and Treasury Minister, Don Polye, is the rightful leader of the National Alliance party.

The National newspaper reports Justice Royale Thompson as saying this puts to rest the question of the leadership of the largest party in parliament.

The Alliance is currently evenly divided over the government and opposition benches.

Mr Polye went to court in July after he and 20 other Alliance members were expelled by the party's national executive.

The paper quotes Mr Polye saying he's glad the matter is finally resolved and has invited the party executive to accept the ruling.

He says he now wants to assure the party's MPs and its supporters around the country that the Alliance is intact.
