FSM feeling shut out of Compact decision making by Washington

The secretary of foreign affairs in the Federated States of Micronesia says calls to end the Compact of Free Association with the U.S. government stems from growing frustration over the FSM's apparent lack of say in the decisions reached.

The senator for Pohnpei state has just introduced a resolution to the FSM Congress calling on President Manny Mori to terminate the Compact by 2018 at the latest.

Lorin Robert says there is concern over how the U.S. government abused its 3 vote majority on the Joint Economic Management Committee in Honolulu recently, by forcing through changes contrary to the interests of FSM.

He says while the treaty arrangement that governs the Compact is still important, changes are needed, starting with the unfair voting process.

"For me, I can say the U.S. relation is very strong. It's just for some of those implementing component, or parts of it, that remains a challenge for us."
