Sport: Attempts to salvage Toa Samoa tour fall through

11:57 am on 11 October 2011

Last ditch attempts to salvage Samoa's rugby league tour of the United Kingdom have failed.

The team had been due to fly out of Australia on Sunday but the Samoan government's decision to withdraw its funding for the team made the trip unviable.

Attempts by Rugby League Samoa to raise sufficient private sponsorship to cover the shortfall were unsuccessful.

Toa Samoa were due to play Cumbria in Whitehaven this Sunday before meeting the England Knights and Ireland later in the month.

Irish officials say they were first informed about the cancellation on Friday and attempts to find a replacement fixture fell through.
