Vanuatu's Chiefs Council CEO Garu sacked

4:14 pm on 14 October 2011

Vanuatu's public service commission has dismissed the Chief Executive Officer of the National Council of Chiefs, Selwin Garu.

The President of the National Council of Chiefs, Chief Gratien Alguet says Mr Garu was sacked for serious misconduct.

Mr Garu, who is a paramount chief, has been criticised for some time after he ordered the forced removal of a high chief from an official meeting of the National Council of Chiefs earlier this year.

Mr Garu was accused of disrespect but he moved quickly to pay a customary fine to restore peace in the traditional meeting house.

It is not clear if Mr Garu will appeal against his dismissal.
