Protesting Tahiti workers now promised pay next month

Reports from French Polynesia say the government has committed itself to pay construction workers protesting in Papeete next month.

A group of workers had this week again blocked most of a key street in Papeete, angry at not being paid for four months.

The group is owed money for work on the new hospital but funding woes and administrative procedures have delayed the disbursement of 2.3 million US dollars to settle the accounts.

The workers are now being told that they will get paid on November the 4th.

Last week, the workers blocked most of the main street and cut off access to the assembly, which delayed the opening of a budget debate.
