Vanuatu has appointed the director of the department of foreign affairs as its first high commissioner to Australia.
Kalvau Kaloris was confirmed in the post in Canberra by the President, Iolu Abil.
This comes after an apparent late bid to choose Donald Kalpokas who has been Vanuatu's ambassador to the United Nations.
President Abil has warned against the misuse of power in high office, referring to allegations of passport sales by Vanuatu missions.
He says such allegations degrade Vanuatu's reputation and image at the regional and international level.
In June, an auditor general's office found serious irregularities and mismanagement at the country's Embassy in China.
It also found the Shanghai office issued visas worth more than two million US dollars, with the money being left unaccounted for.
