Vanuatu finance director confirms allowance procedure

3:23 pm on 20 October 2011

Vanuatu's Director General of Finance says parliamentary allowances for MPs are being paid out of the appropriate fund.

George Maniuri says the parliamentary budget has faced some unforeseen challenges this term, and there are occasions when other funds can be accessed but the money is always paid back.

But he says MPs' allowances are all coming out of parliamentary funds and government is not dipping into the community development fund as has been reported locally.

He says MPs simply need to submit project proposals to get paid their one million vatu, or 10,000 US dollars, which they are entitled to.

"The money paid to the MPs were paid out from the appropriate chapter head, that's the MP allocations fund appropriated by parliament."

George Maniuri says MPs who haven't submitted proposals should do it sooner rather than later.
