Call for investment in Kiribati tourism

10:35 am on 24 October 2011

An opposition candidate in the Kiribati parliamentary elections says the incoming government should increase investment in tourism.

About half the country's seats have been decided, and the rest face a run-off election of the most popular candidates.

The first round saw six new MPs elected, and seven ministers face the second round.

Banuera Berina says the large Phoenix Islands Protected Area could be developed for tourism.

"To a stage where tourists are encourage to visit this place. But the government is not doing anything at all. We are sure that it is the duty of the Government to ensure that the tourism industry is developed as best as they could."
