The opposition Tautua Samoa Party wants an inquiry to find out which government ministries were at fault after a Nigerian man was awarded more than 50,000 US dollars in compensation and damages by the Supreme Court.
The amount does not include the cost of deporting the man, William Okoro, to his home country, which is also covered by the public purse.
The court decision came after a civil suit hearing against the Ministry of Police and Prisons and the division of Immigration at the Ministry of the Prime Minister and Cabinet.
Allegations of police assault on the plaintiff and the loss of his property, including money, were proven.
It was also established that Mr Okoro was arrested and kept at the main Tafaigata prison for more than a month without charges being laid.
The deputy leader of the opposition A'eau Peniamina, says public money has been wasted because of the inappropriate actions by some government officials.
