Opposition to plan to liberalise marijuana law in CNMI

6:54 pm on 24 October 2011

The Saipan Chamber of Commerce is opposing a bill seeking to legalise marijuana for medicinal purposes in the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas.

In a letter to Representative Sylvester Iguel, the Chamber president Douglas Brennan says marijuana is against the law in the CNMI, and the Chamber believes it should stay that way.

Mr Iguel, chair of the House Committee on Health and Welfare, is seeking comments on the bill seeking to legalise marijuana for medicinal use.

But Mr Brennan says the bill's title which states "and for other purposes" has caused the greatest concern for the Chamber.

An earlier bill, calling for marijuana to be legalised for both recreational and medical uses, failed.
