Sport: Fiji sevens team backing youth

11:42 am on 28 October 2011

Fiji's sevens coach Joe Savou is backing his young players to perform in this weekend's Oceania Sevens tournament in Apia.

Fiji open their campaign against Tonga on Saturday morning, and also face PNG, New Caledonia and American Samoa on the opening day.

Joe Savou says the new players have been with the team for a few months now and he's confident they have the quality to make Fiji a title contender once more.

"Our main achievement is to develop the young players and perform in the circuit - especially when we play against Samoa and Australia, Cook Islands and also PNG, who are also members of the IRB tournaments. So it is a good tournament and also good build-up for the first tournament in Gold Coast."

Joe Savou admits he already has an eye on the start of the new World Series next month.
