Niue/New Zealand Mint launch Sponge Bob silver

SpongeBob SquarePants is soon to become legal tender, with today's launch of the latest line of Niue-licensed silver coins from New Zealand Mint.

The vice president for USA Operations at the mint says a production run of 100,000 four-coin sets based on the Nickelodeon television character will be available to collectors and bullion investors from December.

Niue signed a contract with the mint in 2008 that allows it to produce coins on the island's behalf.

Chris Kirkness says he understands from Nickelodeon that it's women aged 25 to 35 who make up the largest share of new entrants to the United States' bullion investment market.

"So a large amount of those mothers are sitting there watching television with their kids and watching Nickelodeon and they felt it was a great idea to offer a product which encompasses the Nickelodeon brand and for this particular one it's SpongeBob and all his friends."

Chris Kirkness says the coins will sell for about 280 US dollars.
